By use of our site and numbers you agree with our terms and conditions. In 2016, Ryanair was the most active international airline by passenger numbers, and both the greatest European airline by scheduled passengers taken.

Ryanair uses over 370 Boeing 737–800 aircraft, having a single 737700 used primarily as a charter aircraft, but also as a backup airplane and for aviator training.[6] The airline was characterised by its own rapid growth, a result of the deregulation of the aviation industry in Europe in 1997 as well as the success of its own low cost business model. Ryanair‘s route system serves 34 nations in Europe, Africa (Morocco), and the Middle East (Israel)

In 2015 Ryanair traffic grew by 18% to 106.4m customers while our average fare fell to €46, load a 93% load factor – and still with no fuel surcharges. Our brand new personalised site comprised an improved “ tailored offerings and My Ryanair” customer registration system allowing even faster bookings. We launched 7 new bases in Belfast, Berlin, Corfu, Gothenburg, Ibiza, Milan Malpensa and announced full year net profit of €1.24bn, a growth of 43% on the last year and became the very first airline to take 100m international passengers in one year.

History
ATR-42 in 1991

Since its establishment in 1984, Ryanair has grown from a modest airline flying the brief journey to London from Waterford into Europe‘s biggest carrier. Ryanair now has over 11,000 members of staff working for the business, most of whom are employed and contracted by multiple agencies to fly on Ryanair aircraft, or as is the situation for aviators, the vast majority are either agency employed or self-employed and their services are contracted to Ryanair. As of 2013 including over 1,200 aviators. After the rapidly growing airline went public in 1997, the cash raised was used to enlarge the airline into a pan–European carrier. Earnings have grown from €231 million to €1,, in 1998 843 million in 2003 and €3,013 million in 2010. Likewise net gains have grown from €48 million to €339 million over the exact same period.
Early years

Ryanair was set up in 1984 as “Danren Enterprises“ by Christopher Ryan, Liam Lonergan (owner of Irish travel agent Club Travel) and Irish businessman Tony Ryan (after whom the business is named), founder of Guinness Peat Aviation.[9] The airline was soon afterwards renamed “Ryanair“ and began operations in 1985 with a 15–seat Embraer Bandeirante turboprop aircraft, flying between Waterford and Gatwick Airport with the goal of breaking the duopoly on London–Ireland flights at that time, held by British Airways and Aer Lingus.

The business added a second route – flying Dublin–Luton in direct rivalry for the very first time with all the Aer Lingus / British Airways duopoly. Under partial EU deregulation, airlines could start new international intra–EU services, as long as a minumum of one of the two authorities gave approval (the so-called “double–disapproval“ regime). Britain, under Margaret Thatcher‘s deregulating Conservative authorities, approved the service, although the Irish government at the time refused its approval, to protect Aer Lingus. With two airplanes and two courses, the fledgling airline taken 82,000 passengers in one year.

Ryanair passenger numbers continued to grow, but the airline normally ran at a loss and, by 1991, was including the closure of Ryanair Europe/London European in need of restructuring. Michael O’Leary was charged with all the task of earning the airline profitable. O’Leary Immediately determined that the best technique for profitability was low fares, fast turn–around times for aircraft, “no frills“ and no business class, in addition to using an individual model of aircraft. With Ryanair sponsorship titles, a Short Sandringham was operated in 1989 but never flew revenue–producing services for the airline.

O’Leary returned from a call to Southwest Airlines convinced that Ryanair could make tremendous inroads to the European air marketplace, at that time controlled by national carriers, which were subsidised to various levels by their parent nations. He competed with the leading airlines by providing a “no-frills“, low cost service. Flights were scheduled into regional airports, which offered lower landing and handling charges than larger established international airports. O’Leary where he helped out with gear handling on Ryanair flights as Chief Executive took part in a publicity stunt. Following the consistent pursuance of its low cost business model, by 1995, Ryanair celebrated its 10th birthday by carrying 2.25 million passengers
